McDermott's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) practice continues its recognition as a global player as the practice group secured rankings in the major M&A league tables for the third quarter of 2008. For the third quarter of 2008, McDermott's Mergermarket rankings included top 20 for number of U.S. buyouts, top 10 for number of U.S.-Midwest region deals and top 10 by value of deals in Swedish M&A.  According to Mergerstat, McDermott ranked in the top 20 for U.S. announced deals, as well as ranking in the top for U.S. middle market advisors and U.S. private equity advisors based on both value and number of deals.  Thomson Reuters ranked McDermott in the top 20 for U.S. target completed deals and leading for completed deals with Spanish involvement. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has named McDermott a Best Place to Work for LGBT Employees for three consecutive years.  McDermott earned this distinction based on its support of LGBT equality in the workplace.  The Firm's policies, such as domestic partner benefits and an inclusive equal employment opportunity policy, demonstrate its commitment to all employees regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression and identity. McDermott's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) practice has again made its mark on the quarterly M&A league tables. For the first quarter for 2008, McDermott was ranked in the top 15 by Thomson Financial based on the number of U.S. target completed deals. Thomson also ranked McDermott among the top 20 firms by value of deals in the European Benelux region (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg). For the U.S. Midwest region, Mergermarket ranked McDermott in the top five law firms by the number of M&A deals. Mergerstat ranked McDermott among the top 20 U.S. announced deals by number of deals. Additionally, Mergerstat ranked the Firm among the 16 top advisors for the drugs, medical supplies and equipment Industry. (April 2008)

The National Law Journal has selected McDermott as one of 20 law firms to appear on its 2008 Appellate Hot List. This recognition comes on the heels of the Firm being named to American Lawyer's "Honor Roll" in its Litigation Department of the Year issue. The 2008 Appellate Hot List is The National Law Journal's survey of firms that scored at least one significant appellate win since January 2007, plus an impressive track record overall. (April 2008)

More than 20 Chicago lawyers have been recognized in the Who's Who Legal: Illinois 2008 edition. Who's Who Legal: Illinois recognizes 607 leading private practitioners in 23 distinct practice areas. Who's Who Legal: Illinois is a guide to the leading lawyers in Illinois. Law Business Research Limited, publisher of Who's Who Legal, selects partners based on research, questionnaires, interviews and nominations from lawyers' clients and professional peers. Law Business Research is an independent London-based publishing group that provides research, analysis and reporting on the international legal services marketplace. (April 2008)

McDermott was recognized in the recently published American Lawyer annual Corporate Scorecard. The Firm's Corporate Department was recognized for the work done in 2007 by its private equity, financial advisory, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) practices. McDermott ranked 13th by the value of private equity deals handled in 2007. Additionally, the Firm ranked in the top 10 by number of M&A transactions in 2007 where the Firm served as counsel to the investment advisors. The annual Corporate Scorecard tracks law firm transaction practices, ranking firms in various corporate finance practices. The latest scorecard includes only public, registered offerings and/or deals from 2007. The data used by American Lawyer to compile the rankings comes from financial information suppliers, including Mergermarket and Thomson, among others. (April 2008)

McDermott's Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department is ranked as a top-tier U.S. firm for trademark contentious work and trademark prosecution and counseling in Managing Intellectual Property's World IP Survey. The World IP Survey ranks the leading intellectual property firms across the world in trademark contentious work and trademark prosecution and counseling. The results of the survey are based on interviews with hundreds of practitioners and in-house counsel worldwide, and reveal which firms are rated by their peers for the strength of their expertise and the depth of their ability to service clients. The rankings were the result of interviews and research conducted between September 2007 and January 2008 across 65 jurisdictions. (March 2008)

McDermott was recently announced as the winner of International Financial Law Review's Restructuring Deal of the Year 2008. (March 2008)

McDermott has been ranked among the top five firms for 2007 investment banker representations by Corporate Control Alert. Firms are ranked by the number of deals with a transaction value of at least $100 million in which they represented an investment bank or financial institution providing mergers and acquisitions advice on a specific deal. McDermott's financial advisory practice advised on 19 of these deals in 2007, and many others with a transaction value that was either undisclosed or less than $100 million. (March 2008)

McDermott has again been ranked as one of the most active patent prosecution firms based on Intellectual Property Today's annual TOP PATENT FIRMS survey (March 2008 issue). The list is based on the number of patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the previous calendar year. With 1,420 patents issued in 2007, McDermott placed second among all general practice firms and 11th overall from 352 firms surveyed. (March 2008)

McDermott has been ranked among the top 25 law firms in the 2007 PIPE Market Investor Counsel League Table by Number of Transactions by PlacementTracker, published by Sagient Research Systems. Sagient Research, a leading publisher of independent research for the financial services and institutional investment communities, also reported that the PIPE market enjoyed its fourth consecutive record year in 2007, with $83.59 billion raised in 1,434 transactions. This total exceeded the 2006 total of $29.35 billion by 185 percent. McDermott's PIPE League Table ranking comes only weeks after mergers and acquisitions and private equity league tables for the fourth quarter of 2007 ranked McDermott as a leading law firm in those markets as well. Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) recently released its 2008 World IP Survey ranking intellectual property firms across 65 jurisdictions. McDermott was recognized as a leading firm in the United States for patent prosecution, patent contentious work and bio life sciences. In the United Kingdom, McDermott was recognized for patent contentious work. The survey is a qualitative ranking of the leading firms in patent prosecution, patent contentious work, biotech and life sciences, and International Trade Commission work. The survey integrates extensive research with interviews from hundreds of in-house counsel, clients and practitioners worldwide. The 2008 World IP Survey also debuts separate regional rankings for firms in the United States, reflecting the growing need for local intellectual property advice. (February 2008)

Fourteen of the Firm's California lawyers have been named Southern California Super Lawyers for 2008 by Law & Politics. Southern California Super Lawyers names the top 5 percent of Southern California Lawyers, as chosen by their peers and through research by Law & Politics. (January 2008)

McDermott was again ranked among the leading mergers and acquisitions firms in a number of league tables for the fourth quarter of 2007 and year-end, published by Bloomberg's M&A Legal Advisory, Mergermarket and Thomson Financial's Mergers & Acquisitions Review. Bloomberg ranked McDermott in the top 20 for Global Private Equity Announced Deals and U.S. Announced Deals. Mergermarket and Thomson Financial ranked the Firm in the top 15 for legal advisers in North American Buyouts and U.S. Target Deals Announced, respectively, among other rankings. In September 2007, McDermott was recognized among the top 10 leading transactional law firms in Law Firm Leaders and Contenders in the Corporate Transactions Market, released by BTI Consulting. Nearly 60 Chicago lawyers have been named Illinois Super Lawyers by Law & Politics. Illinois Super Lawyers identifies the top 5 percent of lawyers in Illinois based on a survey and research conducted by Law & Politics. Additionally, eight partners have been recognized as Illinois Rising Stars. Rising Stars are lawyers under the age of 40 that have been in practice for 10 years or less, and are chosen as a result of surveys completed by recently recognized Super Lawyers. (January 2008)

McDermott Will & Emery was recognized among the top 100 trademark firms by The Trademark Insider. The Firm was ranked 19 for the second quarter of 2007 as a result of its 181 trademarks filed. Year to date for 2007, the Firm has been ranked 29 for its 297 trademarks filed, a substantial increase from its 2006 ranking of 51. McDermott was also recognized as one of the top 10 law firms to advance from quarter one to quarter two of 2007. In the first quarter of 2007, McDermott was ranked 47. The rankings are determined by the number of USPTO applications submitted during each of these time periods in which the firm is listed as the legal representative. McDermott Will & Emery's IP, Media & Technology Department was recognized as one of the Top 10 most active patent litigation firms by IP Law & Business' annual patent litigation survey (July 2007).

McDermott ranked 9th overall in the United States with 33 new patent cases filed in 2006: 15 plaintiff cases and 18 defense cases. This is the fourth consecutive year in which McDermott has been ranked as one of the busiest patent litigation firms in the United States. This continued accomplishment attests the Firm's practice as one of the strongest in patent litigation, ranking in the top category for most district court patent litigations and most recently as a leader in ITC investigations. McDermott's M&A Practice had an outstanding first quarter of 2007, highlighted by our work for Morgan Stanley on the TXU buy-out. McDermott placed in the Top 20 in several deal tables by Bloomberg (Global Legal M&A and Global Financial M&A), by Thomson Financial (Worldwide Rankings for M&A/Legal Advisors and Americas Rankings for M&A/Legal Advisors) and by Mergermarket (Global M&A, North American M&A, Global Top Deals and North America Top Deals for ytd 2007). For the second year running McDermott Will & Emery/Stanbrook LLP has been recognized at the Belgian Legal Awards as one of the nominees for US Law Firm of the Year in Brussels. The awards ceremony took place on 15 February 2007 under the patronage of José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. Members of the jury included representatives from over 50 high-profile international organizations, who short-listed firms in Brussels which had made significant progress in developing a European hub and presence on the local market. Judges reviewed key transactions during the year, success in recruitment both in terms of recent additions and integration of foreign lawyers in the US firm, and we were one of the firms which were short-listed. McDermott's Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department was recognized as one of the most frequently hired patent litigation firms in the United States by IP Law360's recent patent litigation survey.  From 300 law firms, McDermott ranked 6th with 49 new patent cases filed for defendants and plaintiffs in 2006.  The survey measured how frequently a firm was hired in new patent litigations filed between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006, as reflected by the U.S. district and appeals court dockets.  (ITC cases were not included.)
