Green Initiatives

In furtherance of the Firm’s goals of global leadership and responsible citizenship, McDermott is “going green.”  Consistent with our mission to provide excellent legal services to clients and the community, McDermott is striving for excellence in environmental stewardship.

McDermott recognizes its responsibility as an international corporate citizen, and as such is dedicated to reducing the Firm’s operational impact on the environment.

The Firm is currently at various stages of developing and implementing Green Initiatives in the following areas:

Document Management
Our Green Initiatives seek to decrease our reliance on and consumption of paper products.  We plan to increase our focus on paperless technology and ensure that our usage of paper, when necessary, involves reuse and recycling.

Energy Conservation & Alternative Sources
McDermott seeks to reduce its footprint by conserving energy.  Energy-conscious practices will be implemented Firm-wide, and we will encourage the purchase of alternative energy sources in our local markets when feasible.

Our offices have already begun promoting energy efficiency and are developing unique incentive and reward programs to encourage lawyers and staff to conserve energy.

Community Advocacy & Involvement
Our Firm currently represents clients, in the proprietary and nonprofit business sectors, as well as on a pro bono basis, that are involved in environmentally forward ventures.  We seek to expand our commitment to client service in these areas, and aim to increase sponsorship of nonprofit organizations whose missions are environmental protection.

Education & Encouragement
McDermott will offer training and education opportunities to our lawyers and staff that stress the importance of implementing sound environmental practices.  In addition, we will present volunteer opportunities that raise awareness in the community and focus on resource conservation in the office and at home.

Carbon Neutrality
Our Green Initiatives are designed to reach the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.  The Firm is currently exploring options to offset carbon emissions to decrease global warming.

Green Initiatives Grass Roots Participation
Recognizing that environmental protection is a global issue, McDermott formed a Green Initiatives Committee, with members from each of the Firm’s offices worldwide.  These members are charged with developing and monitoring environmentally sound business practices at a Firm-wide level.

In addition, because global change often begins locally, each office has its own Green Initiatives Sub-Committee, including lawyers and staff, who implement the Firm’s Green Initiatives in our local environments.
