Scott Megregian is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office.  He is Head of the European Competition Group.

Scott is recognised by Chambers (“warmly recommended for his knowledge of the interaction between US and EU competition law”), Legal 500 and Euromoney Legal Media Group as a leading international competition lawyer and was recently featured in Global Competition Review’s “Top 40 under 40” in competition.  His expertise includes advising clients on EU and US competition law, including merger control, transaction structuring, counselling on pricing, distribution and IP licensing, litigation and arbitration, criminal defence and government investigations.  Formerly based in the Firm’s Washington DC office, he has extensive experience practising before the European Commission, Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice.

He has substantial experience in a variety of industries, most notably mining and metals, oil and gas, chemicals, engineering and construction, aerospace, defence and high tech.   He has written numerous articles and spoken on competition law issues, including: “Going for the Gold: Key Drivers of  US Private Antitrust Litigation”, Law Society (2006); “Cutting Edge Distribution Issues in the Retail Sector: Fidelity Rebates, Loyalty Programs and Category Management”, BIICL, London (October 2005); “Managing the Review Process in Cross Border Transactions”, IBC, Cambridge (August 2005); “Competition Issues involving the Acquisition of Licensing of Intellectual Property”, Korea Economic Daily Seminar, Korea (May 2005) and “Silence, Lies and Cover-up, responding to Cartel Investigation in the US, UK and EU”, International Bar Association, Auckland, New Zealand (October 2004).

   Scott is the US Rapporteur for the International Bar Association’s Antitrust & Trade Law newsletter, published by the Section on Business Law.  He is a member of Business Law Section (Committee C) of the IBA and the Antitrust and Trade Regulation section of the ABA.  Scott is also listed in Legal Experts.

  • Advised Orica on its acquisition of Dyno Nobel’s European explosives and initiating systems businesses
  • Advising Constellation Brands in the acquisition of Vincor International
  • Advising Merrill Lynch on the European competition aspects of its acquisition of EKT’s energy trading business
  • Advising Schmalbach Lubeca’s on the sale of Continental Can Europe to Ball Corporation and the sale of its PET packaging and closures business to Amcor
  • Advising VIAG AG’s merger with VEBA AG

  • Representing Nike in its competition claim before the English High Court against the International Tennis Federation and the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments
  • Representing Sandisk Corporation on its claim against Sisvel   and the founders of the MPEG patent pool for violation of UK and EU competition law before the English High Court
  • Representing Morgan Stanley in the Commission’s sector inquiry in the Energy and Natural Gas Sectors
  • Representing Static Control Components on its complaint to the European Commission regarding violation of Article 82 by Lexmark
  • Represented Formula One Group regarding the European Commission’s investigation into sports rights licensing in new media
  • Advised Ball Packaging Europe with respect to the European Commission’s investigation of Alcan’s acquisition of Pechiney
  • Advised on the successful use of competition law defence (Article 81) to void licensing royalties in London based arbitration
