Anthony M. Mansfield is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.  As a member of the Energy and Derivatives Markets Practice Group, Tony concentrates his practice on commodities, derivatives and securities litigation, complex commercial litigation and regulatory matters.  He currently serves as a member of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Energy Markets Advisory Committee.

Prior to returning to private practice in 2007, Tony was a Chief Trial Attorney and Counsel to the Director in the Division of Enforcement of the CFTC.  While there, he managed a team of lawyers and investigators focused primarily on manipulation in the energy markets. Among other things, Tony oversaw the division’s investigation of the 2003 price spike in the U.S. natural gas market.  He was also responsible for the division’s investigations of numerous energy and power marketing companies relating to price reporting in the natural gas markets.  Tony played a central role in the commission’s subpoena enforcement actions against natural gas price index compilers, involving First Amendment “Reporter’s Privilege” issues, and was heavily involved in the commission’s defense of its exercise of jurisdiction over false reporting in the natural gas markets pursuant to the Commodity Exchange Act.

Tony is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.  He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Futures Industry Association.
