Jonathan H. Flynn* is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office.  Jon is a member of the Firm’s Energy and Derivatives Markets Practice Group, where he focuses his practice on transactional and regulatory issues related to commodity and environmental markets.

Jon represents investment banks, hedge funds, industrial companies, and trade associations on a wide range of issues, including the regulation of commodity and derivative transactions.  He has particular experience in the emerging area of climate regulation and renewable energy.  His work in this area has included drafting commercial agreements for a developer of wind farms, and advising clients on the regulation of energy related products, such as electricity demand response programs and hydrokinetic power generation.  Prior to joining the Firm, Jon studied environmental law and climate change legislation at Georgetown, where he was a member of the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review.  This research included an in-depth review of the legislative and policy issues related to greenhouse gas regulation, and Massachusetts v. EPA, the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on the issue of global climate change.

Jon recently published an article, “Productive Preservation and the Reinvention of Industrial America,” that argued for a new approach to dealing with environmentally distressed urban areas that is based on historic preservation law.  This article received the 2006 Smith Babcock Williams Award from the American Planning Association, and was published by the American Bar Association in the Winter 2007 edition of The Urban Lawyer.

Jon graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with honors in 2007, and from Dartmouth College with a degree in history in 2000.  Between college and law school, Jon worked throughout the United States for a major international corporation as part of its leadership development program in the company’s technical sales division.

Jon is admitted to practice in Massachusetts.
