SAN DIEGO (March 15, 2005) — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that John Hankins, intellectual property partner, has relocated to San Diego where he will serve as the partner-in-charge of the Firm's local office.  This relocation will allow Mr. Hankins to expand the Firm’s presence in the San Diego market and be closer to his West Coast clients, including Advanced Micro Devices.  Additionally, Cathryn Campbell, who joined McDermott in March 2003 to start-up the Firm's San Diego office, has relocated to the Firm's Washington, D.C. office to further develop and expand the Firm’s Life Sciences practice nationally and in Europe.

"John will focus on managing and growing the San Diego office in the area of life sciences, intellectual property and technology," commented Jack Lever, head of the Firm's Intellectual Property Department.  "He will also be an additional resource in the technical area to our expanding West Coast IP practice, now numbering 70 IP lawyers."

Mr. Hankins, who joined McDermott in 1998, focuses his practice on infringement and validity matters, the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and due diligence studies.  He has prepared and prosecuted patents in a range of technical areas, including computer software, architecture and security; telecommunications; hard disk and tape drives; storage area networks; semiconductor devices and memories; digital imaging and reproduction; automotive electronic controls and transmissions; automotive body structure and medical devices.

Mr. Hankins earned his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law-Newark, and his B.S. in electrical engineering from Trinity College.  He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and California and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

McDermott opened its San Diego office in March 2003 with the addition of Campbell & Flores, LLP, propelling its life sciences practice into the forefront of biotechnology IP.  Campbell & Flores, LLP, which was founded in 1992, specialized in biotechnology intellectual property.
