McDermott Named Sponsor of the Year by North Cambridge Catholic High School
BOSTON (May 15, 2008) — Today McDermott Will & Emery's Boston Office is being recognized as North Cambridge Catholic High School's (NCCHS) corporate sponsor of the year. McDermott will be honored at the "Tip O'Neill Gala, A Salute to Our Stars", which is being held at the Seaport Hotel.
"Our staff has done a splendid job working in conjunction with the Cristo Rey work study program," commented Susan Cooke, head of the Firm's Boston office. "McDermott believes a commitment to excellence begins at the community level. Through the efforts of our partnership with the Cristo Rey program, we are able to help young students acquire valuable business experience and also provide them with an ideal mentoring environment."
According to NCCHS representatives, "McDermott exemplifies all the traits of an outstanding sponsor. You have gone above and beyond in showing your commitment to the mission of our school and to the Corporate Work Study Program."
NCCHS is a member of the national Cristo Rey Network whose schools combine a college preparatory curriculum with a corporate internship program. NCCHS is supported by more than 70 local businesses. In addition to honoring McDermott as corporate sponsor of the year, NCCHS will honor One Family, Inc. as its non-profit organization sponsor. One Family's mission is to link education with essential support services and mentoring as the most reliable and direct route to economic independence and self-esteem.
NCCHS students are multi-cultural youth of limited economic means who seek a rigorous college preparatory experience. The school's Corporate Work Study Program provides 60 percent of their tuition costs. NCCHS has a 100 percent rate of college acceptance, as compared to an average of 68 percent for the school district in which it is located. Four NCCHS students participate in the program at McDermott's Boston office, with each student spending one day per week in the office.
Linda Mangini who manages McDermott's Boston Office, noted that, "The students are motivated young people who are both enthusiastic and appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of McDermott. I am very proud of the efforts made by our staff to mentor them."
McDermott managers have worked one-on-one with each student, teaching them what it takes to be a contributing professional and about achieving balance in one’s life. In addition, McDermott's managers have taught classes at the students summer training; hosted sponsor orientations for the school; and served on their job committee. McDermott was selected for their exemplary leadership in developing NCCHS students as young professionals.
