McDermott Develops HIPAA Security Materials
BOSTON (September 13, 2004) — McDermott Will & Emery’s HIPAA practice group, in conjunction with CHC Healthcare Solutions, has developed a HIPAA Security Self-Assessment tool and a set of detailed, cost-effective HIPAA security materials, including template policies, procedures and contract addenda. These materials will aid health care organizations and business associates in their HIPAA assessment and implementing of these security policies in a cost and time effective manner.
The deadline for conducting a HIPAA Security Assessment and implementing HIPAA Security policies and procedures is April 20, 2005. URAC, a nonprofit accreditation group has reported that many health care organizations are lagging behind in meeting HIPAA’s security requirements.
“McDermott is bringing the benefit of cost and time savings backed by solid legal drafting that will enable covered entities and business associates to minimize the time spent conducting the required assessment, converting findings into effective policies and procedures, and then training and educating employees, ” commented Stephen Bernstein, partner in the Firm’s Health Department and co-leader of the HIPAA practice group.
In conjunction with the launch of the Firm's HIPAA Security Self-Assessment tool, McDermott will be hosting an audio conference on Tuesday, September 28 on these regulations and the intersection of HIPAA security and privacy. More information about this program, including how to register, can be found at www.mwe.com/info/hipaasecurity/.
In November 2001, McDermott launched HIPAA PRIVACY SOLUTIONS, a comprehensive privacy implementation product that can be tailored for use in specific health care industry segments, including hospitals and health systems, academic medical centers, physicians and medical groups, health insurers and HMOs.
