Silicon Valley Office Adds IP Partner

PALO ALTO (March 16, 2005) — The Silicon Valley office of McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Dr. Andrew Kumamoto has joined the Firm's Intellectual Property Department as a partner.  Dr. Kumamoto focuses his practice on patent litigation, technology transactions and strategic patent planning.

Dr. Kumamoto is experienced in all areas of intellectual property law, including litigation, U.S. and international patent prosecution, patent analysis and opinions.  He also has extensive in-house experience having served as the outside general counsel for Target Quest, LLC; the director of intellectual property for Hyseq, Inc.; and patent counsel for Cell Genesys, Inc. and Xenotech, Inc.

Dr. Kumamoto earned his J.D. in 1995 from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in molecular biology (NIH Fellowship in genetics) in 1989 from the University of California, Los Angeles.  He earned his B.S., magna cum laude, departmental honors, in biochemistry in 1981 from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Kumamoto is a member of the California State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is also admitted to practice before the Federal Circuit, Ninth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of California.
