Webcast Reveals Current HIPAA Mindset
CHICAGO - McDermott Will & Emery's national HIPAA practice group and the Internet Television Network announced polling results from a sample of health care professionals across the United States who participated in their co-sponsored December 12, 2001, interactive webcast, "HIPAA Compliance: Best Practices and Q&A."
The program included participants from a range of health care industry segments, including hospitals, health systems and medical specialty groups that responded to questions during the program via cutting-edge webcast technology. Results of two important polling questions revealed the following:

Eighty-three percent of respondents indicated their organization plans to comply with HIPAA's transaction code set regulations by the original October 2002 compliance date. Stephen Bernstein, a partner in McDermott Will & Emery's Boston office and Co-Leader of the Firm's HIPAA Practice Group noted, "This result supports the view of many that HIPAA is here to stay, and it makes sense to continue to move ahead toward compliance even though the transaction code set portion of the HIPAA regulations will be delayed."

Sixty-three percent of respondents, when asked about HIPAA compliance arrangements, indicated they are not looking beyond their individual hospital setting.
Webcast panelists included lawyers from McDermott, Will & Emery's national HIPAA practice group, as well as representatives from Advocate Health Care, Adventist Health System.
