Eric Zimmerman Appointed to Chair AHLA's Regulation, Accreditation and Payment Practice Group
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 18, 2004) — Eric Zimmerman, a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, was recently appointed as 2004-2005 Chair of the American Health Lawyers Association’s (Health Lawyers) Regulation, Accreditation and Payment (RAP) Practice Group. The association provides educational and professional development services for 9,500 healthcare attorneys. Health Lawyers’ fourteen practice groups provide professional development activities and networking opportunities for members who focus on specific areas of health law such as reimbursement, or work in special employment settings such as hospitals. Mr. Zimmerman previously served as vice chair of the RAP Practice Group. The RAP Practice Group addresses issues related to reimbursement and coverage, including Medicare and other government payor laws, regulations, and instructions, as well as issues related to healthcare organizational accreditation such as JCAHO and other accrediting entity standards.
As a member of McDermott’s Health Department, Mr. Zimmerman is a recognized Medicare law and policy authority who helps clients navigate federal legislative and regulatory processes, improve reimbursement and maintain compliance. He counsels and represents hospitals and health systems, physician organizations, ambulatory surgery centers, device and equipment manufacturers and suppliers, medical trade associations, and professional societies.
Mr. Zimmerman has broad experience in counseling clients on Medicare reimbursement strategies and transaction implications. He is advancing legislative and regulatory changes improving Medicare reimbursement and relief from federal requirements. He has formed advocacy coalitions to influence Medicare regulations and other federal health care policy and represented clients before the U.S. Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He has advised the financial community on the implications of federal legislative and regulatory developments and has represented providers before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board, Medicare Geographic Classification Review Board, Administrative Law Judges and federal courts, and has advised his clients on specific compliance questions and worked with providers to establish compliance programs.
Mr. Zimmerman is an advisory board member of the Bureau of National Affairs’ Medicare Report, an Editorial Board Member of Outpatient Surgery Magazine, and a member of the Board of Advisors of Ambulatory Surgery Compliance and Reimbursement Insider.
Mr. Zimmerman earned his B.A. from Emory University in 1989, his M.B.A. from the George Washington University School of Business and Public Management in 1993, and his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law in 1997.
