McDermott's Health Department Welcomes Eric Hargan

CHICAGO (January 7, 2008) — McDermott Will & Emery is very pleased to announce Eric D. Hargan has joined as partner in the Firm's Health Law Department in the Chicago office.  Mr. Hargan, most recently the Acting Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will be working primarily on transactional matters in the health sector and will provide government strategies support for health industry clients alongside lawyers from the Firm's Washington, D.C. office.

At HHS, Mr. Hargan served as Regulatory Policy Officer of the Department, overseeing the development and approval of all HHS regulations and significant guidances.  In addition, Mr. Hargan oversaw all operations, including Medicare, Medicaid, the regulation of food, drugs and medical devices, public health, welfare programs, medical research and other activities.

In addition, Mr. Hargan led a number of initiatives, including implementing the President’s Management Agenda, combating bio-terrorism and public health emergency preparedness.  He was the recipient of the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service.  From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Hargan served as Principal Associate Deputy Secretary of HHS, and from 2003 to 2005, he served as Deputy General Counsel.

Prior to joining HHS, Mr. Hargan was a partner in a large international law firm in Chicago where he focused on corporate law, particularly mergers and acquisitions, securities and venture capital transactions.  He has significant experience in other areas, including cross-border transactions, public finance and institutional lending.

Mr. Hargan earned his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law and his B.A., cum laude, from Harvard University.  He is admitted to practice in Illinois.
