Four Health Partners Named Health Lawyers' Fellows
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 22, 2005) — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that four of its health partners, Michael F. Anthony, Gary Scott Davis, Douglas M. Mancino and Joel L. Michaels have been selected by the American Health Lawyers Association (Association) as Fellows of its organization. The Fellows program recognizes the importance of the Association’s life-long leader community and was established to create a forum for former Association leaders to remain active and continue to contribute to the success of the Association. The 2005 inaugural class of Fellows includes 20 former presidents of the Association (or its predecessors), authors and past leaders of practice groups and programs.
Michael F. Anthony, a former president of the Association and a partner in the Firm's Chicago office, serves as counsel on a number of projects including provider affiliations, integrated delivery system development, formation of HMOs and PPOs, health care mergers, acquisitions and affiliations, various joint ventures, joint operating arrangements, reimbursement systems, medical staff matters, Catholic/non-Catholic transactions, medical group representation and other legal and policy issues. He is the former senior vice president for Legal Affairs at the American Hospital Association. Mr. Anthony also worked in various administrative capacities at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Gary Scott Davis, a partner in the Firm's Miami office, is a past member (1994-2000) of the Association's Board of Directors, and from 1995 to 1999 he served as a member of the Association's Executive Committee, as well as Chairman of the Association’s Membership Committee. He is the recipient of the Association's prestigious David J. Greenburg Service Award (2000). Mr. Davis concentrates his practice on managed care, emerging health benefit plans, strategic acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings and reorganizations, joint ventures arrangements and related transactional, regulatory and reimbursement issues.
Douglas M. Mancino, president of the Association from 1993 to 1994 and partner in McDermott's Los Angeles office, represents nonprofit organizations on tax, business and financial matters. He represents organizations and individuals in connection with the formation of nonprofit organizations such as public charities, private foundations, corporate foundations and trade associations, corporate transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, shared services, conversions from nonprofit to for-profit status, and restructuring of corporate organizations. Mr. Mancino has extensive experience advising on both health care transactions, as well as on audit, appeals and tax controversy matters.
Joel L. Michaels, a partner in McDermott's Washington, D.C. office, has served on the Association's Board of Directors and previously chaired its HMOs and Health Plans Substantive Interest Law Committee. Mr. Michaels is the recipient of the Association's prestigious David J. Greenburg Service Award (1996). He has extensive experience in health care insurance and health care delivery system organization, financing and regulation. Mr. Michaels advises on a variety of federal law issues, including Medicare and Medicaid regulation, the False Claims Act, the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute, ERISA, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
