Medicare Modernization Webcast Series

CHICAGO — McDermott Will & Emery's Health and Employee Benefits Departments are pleased to announce the launch of an executive briefing series focusing on the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act of 2003.  The series, which started today, addresses various aspects of how the new laws affect hospitals, health care service providers, employers, health plan sponsors, health plans and other payors.

The first briefing of the series,  "The Impact of Medicare Modernization on Hospitals and Health Systems," was held on December 18, 2003, and addressed the significant changes for hospitals and other health care service providers, including Medicare reimbursement, expanded Medicare managed care program and its implications, and the moratorium on physician referrals to specialty hospitals.

The additional two programs in the series are scheduled for January, and details are as follows:

"The New Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit:  Providing Access and Managing Costs"

MWE health lawyers will review the terms of Medicare's new prescription drug benefit, and how it will be provided by Medicare Advantage plans and prescription drug plan sponsors.  Topics to be addressed consist of benefits design, including beneficiary cost-sharing features, formulary and drug pricing considerations, plan payment and bid processes, and the introduction of the new payors to Medicare.

"The Medicare Prescription Drug Act:  Implications for Employers"

MWE employee benefits lawyers will discuss how the Medicare prescription drug legislation affects employers and other health plan sponsors with special emphasis on retiree health plan design, federal subsidies for retiree health plan sponsors and the new tax rules for health savings accounts.
