Intellectual Property Practice Ranks in Patent Litigation Survey
WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 21, 2005) — McDermott Will & Emery’s Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department was named in IP Law & Business's annual survey of law firms that filed the most cases in 2004. This year's patent litigation survey, "The Expanding IP Universe," ranked McDermott among the top 10 busiest firms in the United States in terms of filing the most patent cases in 2004.
With a total of 29 patent cases filed on behalf of clients in 2004, McDermott ranked 10th among the firms who filed the most cases. The Firm was listed 11th with 15 plaintiff cases and ranked 16th with 14 cases as defense counsel. The cases included in the survey were limited to federal district cases filed in 2004 and active as of February 1, 2005. The survey did not include International Trade Commission and Federal Circuit cases.

McDermott Will & Emery's strategic patent prosecution program also resulted in 1,633 patents for its clients in 2004, ranking the Firm in the Top 10 of Intellectual Property Today's annual survey of top patent firms, published in March 2005.
The Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department of McDermott Will & Emery currently numbers more than 175 IPMT lawyers and patent agents. Our IPMT lawyers engage in various aspects of IP work, including advertising and marketing, computer and internet law, copyrights, legislation, litigation, patents, trade dress, trademarks, trade secrets, unfair competition and antitrust. More than 100 of the Firms IPMT lawyers hold technical degrees and are patent bar members. Of those, more than half hold a degree in electrical engineering, biotechnology, chemistry or other technical disciplines including computer engineering.
