Douglas Mancino Addresses the Taxation of Exempts in New Book

LOS ANGELES — Douglas M. Mancino, a partner resident in McDermott Will & Emery’s Los Angeles office, is co-author of Taxation of Exempt Organizations, published by Warren Gorham & Lamont. The treatise, which provides tax analysis and guidance on the federal taxation of organizations recognized or seeking to be recognized as exempt, will be released for publication on May 15, 2002.

Taxation of Exempt Organizations, co-authored by Mr. Mancino and Professor Frances Hill, provides in-depth coverage and analysis of all federal taxation matters affecting exempt organizations. Some of the topics discussed in the treatise include unrelated business income, specific rules applicable to private foundations and the complex tax and reporting procedures for political organizations.

"My experience has armed me with an arsenal of knowledge on the rules and regulations exempt organizations must follow and the laws they must comply with," commented Mr. Mancino. "This treatise not only explores the tax rules, regulations and laws, it digs deeper to analyze and outline proposed compliance procedures for tax-exempt organizations."

Mr. Mancino, who joined McDermott’s Health Law Department in February 1987, has represented nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years on tax, business and financial matters. He represents organizations and individuals regarding the formation of nonprofit organizations, such as public charities, private foundations and trade associations, corporate transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, shared services, conversions from nonprofit to for-profit status, and restructuring of corporate organizations. He also has extensive experience in audits, appeals and tax controversy matters and has litigated several tax exemption cases in the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Mr. Mancino is a Council Director of the ABA Tax Section, and a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel. He also serves on the editorial advisory boards of The Exempt Organizations Tax Review, Taxation of Exempts, BNA's Health Law Reporter, and Decisions in Imaging Economics.

In addition, Mr. Mancino previously has served as President of the American Health Lawyers Association (1993-94), Chair of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the ABA's Tax Section (1995-97), a member of the Board of Advisors of the National Center on Philanthropy and the Law (1998-2000), and Chair of the Tax and Accounting Interest Group of the ABA's Health Law Section (1998-2001).
