International Government Relations
Our legislative lawyers have represented client interests in Congress on matters ranging from private tariff relief legislation to measures that would enable private parties to file actions based on customs or dumping allegations. The Firm has coordinated legislative action related to administrative trade actions, such as antidumping and Section 301 cases. The Firm worked extensively on trade legislation on behalf of international electronics manufacturers and others, and provides comprehensive monitoring services. In addition, McDermott Will & Emery has experience handling legislative issues relating to international agricultural matters. We have effectively communicated client concerns to ensure that foreign markets remain open to U.S. agricultural exports.
International clients often have particular intellectual property interests that, while not trade matters, are of unique significance to overseas clients. The Firm has extensive experience in building legislative coalitions on behalf of overseas clients with such interests. We have built effective coalitions by identifying allied domestic interests, and provide complete monitoring services in all intellectual property areas. Furthermore, the Firm has effectively communicated client interests concerning proposals to limit international investment opportunities in the U.S. market. The Firm has detailed familiarity with proposals for increased disclosure requirements and other restrictions with respect to investment in the United States. We also have extensive experience representing client interests in legislative initiatives in the high-technology and tax areas.
