Overview
Campbell Herbert focuses his practice on complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes.
Campbell has acted in arbitrations seated in all major arbitration centres and conducted under a variety of different arbitration rules, including the UNCITRAL, LCIA, ICC, SIAC, HKIAC and ICSID Rules, as well as in national courts. He has represented clients in a broad range of sectors including telecommunications, technology and cryptocurrency, energy, and financial services and private capital, and has particular experience advising on post-M&A, cryptocurrency and blockchain, and investment disputes, and coordinating global litigation strategy.
In addition to his work as counsel, Campbell has served as tribunal secretary and is a member of the AIAC Panel of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He serves on the editorial Board of the International Arbitration Law Review and has previously served as Adjunct Professor and Visiting Fellow at the City University of Hong Kong, School of Law.
Campbell is admitted to practice law in England & Wales (solicitor advocate (civil)), New York, the Cayman Islands, New South Wales and New Zealand. Prior to joining McDermott, Campbell practiced in the London, New York and Hong Kong offices of another international law firm, in the Cayman Islands, and at a leading New Zealand law firm.

- Advising a Hong Kong-based conglomerate on a dispute with an Indian multinational technology company concerning a turnkey technology platform (SIAC)*
- Advising an ultra-high net worth individual on a dispute concerning the purchase of cryptocurrency (SIAC)
- Advising a major upstream oil and gas company in a long-running dispute with the National Iranian Oil Company arising out of a long-term gas supply agreement, including in related proceedings before the English High Court
- Advising employees of a global hedge fund in a dispute with their former employer (LCIA)
- Advising a group of Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs in relation to related contractual and shareholder disputes with a total value of USD 100 million arising out of joint ventures in Cyprus and Ukraine (UNCITRAL)*
- Advising an international retail company in its defence of contractual claims brought against it by an Asian private equity firm arising out of the sale of the company’s operations in South Korea (ICC)*
- Advising a global private equity firm on its defence of a USD 300 million post-M&A claim brought against it by another prominent private equity firm arising out of an investment in South Korea (HKIAC)*
- Advising a multi-billion dollar alternative investment and private equity fund in connection with multiple Hong Kong-seated arbitrations (HKIAC), and ancillary court proceedings in Hong Kong, the Cayman Islands and St Kitts & Nevis*
- Advising a US-headquartered multi-national travel services company in a series of related HKIAC-administered arbitrations with an amount in dispute of approximately USD 680 million concerning its investment in a NYSE-listed, Shanghai-based electric vehicle company (HKIAC)*
- Advising a multinational truck manufacturer in connection with its Europe-wide defence of claims arising from the European Commission’s decision relating to the trucks cartel, including in proceedings before the Competition Appeal Tribunal*
- Advising a global commerce platform in a landmark dispute in the English Commercial Court relating to the proper interpretation of a material adverse effect clause arising out of the company’s acquisition of two business-to-business payments technology providers during the COVID-19 pandemic*
- Advising the Republic of Cyprus in its successful defence of an EUR 1.2 billion claim arising out of the collapse of a major bank following the Greek sovereign debt crisis (ICSID)*
- Advising a state-owned oil company on a joint venture dispute with a sovereign state, the JV’s sole offtaker (UNCITRAL)*
- Advising a Korean investor on the set aside and resisting the enforcement of a USD 100 mn arbitral award arising out of a post-M&A dispute*
- Advising an AIM-listed real estate developer in a series of interrelated arbitrations and court proceedings in India in respect of disputes arising out portfolio management services*
