McDermott Partners Catherine Battin, Richard Call, Jonathan Lockhart, Elizabeth Lu, and Mary Kay McCalla Martire spoke at the Chicago Tax Club’s 70th Annual Fall Seminar.

Catherine Battin and Richard Call spoke on the topic “Hot Topics in State Income Tax Apportionment.” Discussion covered current issues, cases, and developments related to apportionment, especially the sales factor and alternative apportionment.

Learning objectives included:

  • Understanding current developments and issues in the sales factor
  • Identifying potential aspects of the sales factor to consider for planning
  • Teaching fundamentals regarding building a viable alternative apportionment argument

Jonathan Lockhart and Elizabeth Lu spoke on the topic “International Tax Updates,” which covered Pillar Two updates, as well as recent IRS/Treasury guidance, including the proposed DCL/DPL rules. They also covered international planning strategies to maximize FDII and FTC benefits and reduce BEAT liability.

Mary Kay McCalla Martire presented a session titled “Ethics Considerations for Tax Professionals,” which provided an update on current developments in the field of ethics. This session provided practical insights that both attorneys and Certified Public Accountants can utilize in their daily interactions that will ensure that you are in compliance with Illinois ethics rules and pronouncements.
