McDermott Will & Emery is proud to sponsor Chicago Debates’ first in-person competition since February of 2020. The McDermott Will & Emery Novice Invitational is Saturday, May 7, 2022 and features novice teams from five Chicago public schools:
- Chicago Bulls College Prep
- Hancock College Prep
- Kenwood Academy High School
- Solorio Academy High School
- Taft High School
The Novice Invitational has become one of Chicago Debates’ premier annual tournaments focusing on new debaters. This tournament allows novice debaters to compete across conferences in a small and welcoming, but competitive environment.
We are proud to sponsor Chicago Debates’ first in-person competition since February of 2020.
“McDermott is pleased to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Chicago Debates. We have hosted an annual Chicago Debates invitational tournament for more than a decade, and it’s always amazing to see these young debaters in action,” said Michael Boykins, managing partner of McDermott’s Chicago office. “This event gives young people from underserved Chicago communities a platform for developing their public speaking skills and learning to be critical thinkers and leaders. At McDermott, we believe that academic debate opens up possibilities for students and potentially sparks an interest in pursuing a career in the legal profession.”
The tournament includes volunteer judges from McDermott who also participate with students in a career roundtable discussion about becoming a lawyer. Learn more about Chicago Debates at ChicagoDebates.org.
