Overview
PARIS (24 November 2017) International law firm McDermott Will & Emery will sponsor in 2018 a course at the Sorbonne Law School in Paris that will give students chance to study the legal framework around emerging electronic commerce and the digital economy. This sponsorship is part of McDermott’s commitment to support innovation and advancing academic education.
As part of the program, “Master 2; Laws of Electronic Commerce and the Digital Economy” (Master 2; DC2EN), students will benefit from meetings and interaction with McDermott’s international network of data protection & cyber security experts and study the developing legal issues around all aspects of the digital revolution, in particular connected cars, ‘Smart Cities’, e-health, FinTech and evolving competition law. McDermott lawyers in Paris (Romain Perray), London (Ashley Winton), Boston (Mark Schreiber and Ann Killilea), Los Angeles (Michael Morgan) and Shanghai (Leon Liu and Jared Nelson) will be assisting the students. Notably, the course will also have a focus on Japan, a country at the leading-edge of tech adoption and a strategic market for McDermott who work extensively with Japanese businesses and organizations.
Romain Perray, partner at McDermott Will & Emery in Paris and a lecturer at the Sorbonne Law School who teaches the Master 2 DC2EN, is heading up the initiative and commented, “The course will run as the EU General Data Protection Regulation comes into force in May next year and is an extremely timely opportunity for students to study and measure the impact of new technologies and, in particular, the protection of personal data within companies and administrative bodies.
“Interaction between students and business specialists gives the students an excellent opportunity to see how theories and law work in practice – and to better appreciate the complex evolving issues in this fast developing space,” he added.
Judith Rochfeld, Professor of Private Law at the Sorbonne Law School and Director of the Master 2 “Laws of Electronic Commerce and the Digital Economy”, commented, “Strong ties between students and firms such as McDermott Will and Emery are vital for student training. This project, consisting of writing by the students of a collective work on the delicate and current points of the GDPR, supported by the professors and meetings with professionals of the sectors concerned, will assure them an excellent training in the issues affecting the business world that they will be working in. The completed work will be published.”
