McDermott Expands Regulatory Capabilities With International Trade and National Security Partner

Overview

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery welcomes Darshak Dholakia as a partner in its Regulatory Practice Group in Washington, DC. As international trade and national security issues continue to evolve, Darshak helps clients proactively assess and mitigate risk, develop their compliance programs, conduct internal investigations, and argue before relevant government agencies in compliance- and enforcement-related proceedings. Most notably, he advises on matters involving economic sanctions, anti-money laundering, anti-corruption laws, and export controls. He joins from Dechert.

“Darshak’s extensive experience in national security and international trade compliance are highly sought after in today’s high-stakes global markets,” said Alva Mather, global head of McDermott’s Regulatory Practice Group. “With Darshak, clients have a trusted advisor to help them overcome the myriads of regulatory hurdles they face. His government and private practice perspectives will enhance our robust capabilities, with an expanded focus on national security reviews, export control issues, and compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, among other matters.”

Darshak advises clients on compliance with economic sanctions programs administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control. He also advises clients on transactions that involve national security reviews conducted by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States as well as issues under the U.S. Treasury Department’s Outbound Investment Security Program, and represents foreign and domestic investors, acquirers, sellers, and targets in investment transactions. Darshak previously clerked in the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.

“McDermott’s strong global platform is an ideal place to expand my practice and leverage existing synergies between clients, including across the Firm’s international trade, government contracts, global white-collar and government investigations, and privacy & cybersecurity practices,” Darshak said. “I look forward to helping clients navigate an increasingly complex national security and trade landscape.”
