McDermott Raises the Pro Bono Bar, Leaps 43 Spots on The American Lawyer’s 2024 Scorecard

Overview

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery climbed 43 spots on The American Lawyer’s 2024 Pro Bono Scorecard – the highest jump among ranked law firms.

“We are incredibly proud of our team’s dedication to pro bono work. This remarkable progress in the rankings is a testament to our lawyers’ hard work and passion,” said Elizabeth Lewis, Firm-wide pro bono and community service partner at McDermott.

The American Lawyer’s chart ranks Am Law 200 firms based on their pro bono scores for work performed by US-based lawyers. The score is equally divided: half for the average number of pro bono hours per lawyer in 2023, and the other half for the percentage of lawyers who performed more than 20 hours of pro bono work.

McDermott improved in both core metrics, with a 17.6-point (58.9%) increase in average hours per lawyer (from 29.9 to 47.5). The Firm also achieved a nearly 70% increase in the percentage of lawyers contributing more than 20 hours (from 36.6% to 62.2%).

“While we’re thrilled with such outstanding growth, what truly matters is the impact that we are having in the communities where we live and work,” said Paul Thompson, pro bono litigation partner and office managing partner in Washington, DC. “Our commitment to making a meaningful difference in our communities will continue to guide us.”
