Overview
International law firm McDermott Will & Emery has received high accolades from The Legal 500 United States 2020 for addressing complex legal matters with a creative, resourceful and analytical approach that prioritizes clients and their business objectives. Overall, the Firm received 35 practice rankings, including four in Tier 1, as well as 145 individual lawyer recommendations. Highlighted praise speaks to the Firm’s commitment to diversity, determination to help clients achieve their organization’s objectives, strong initiative, creative, “outside the box” thinking and a proven track record of success.
For the ninth consecutive year, the Firm’s Health practice garnered Tier 1 rankings in both Healthcare: Service Providers, and Healthcare: Insurers. The practice is touted as providing a full spectrum of services in the healthcare space, with the digital health practice having “tremendous experience and expertise across the entire ecosystem from insurers, to health systems, to tech companies.”
Also for the ninth consecutive year, the Firm’s Corporate & Transactional practice earned a Tier 1 ranking in Mergers & Acquisitions: M&A: Middle-Market ($500-999M). The team is noted for “the ability to think creatively and work outside the commercial norm” and their “willingness to be truly one team with in-house and other advisors.” McDermott’s Tax practice ranked Tier 1 in Tax: US Taxes: Contentious for the fourth consecutive year.
McDermott added two practice groups to their notable rankings this year. Launched in 2019, our Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Group quickly earned Tier 4 rankings in Dispute Resolution: Appellate-Courts of Appeals/Appellate-Supreme Courts (States and Federal). Reviewers commend the lawyers as having “the capacity and commitment to work with diverse clients and ease their concerns about legal matters.” Additional testimonial sites the team’s success in obtaining a temporary nationwide injunction against the “unlawful presence” of international students which remains in effect today.
The Energy group also joined the roster for the first time this year, earning Tier 2 ranking in Energy Regulation: Conventional Power. The Energy/Renewable category jumped from Tier 4 in 2019 to Tier 3 in 2020.
McDermott maintained its Tier 2 ranking for our Employee Benefits group for Employee Benefits and Retirement Plans: Transactional. High praise from clients include “the team is competent, diligent and works hard to solve complex or difficult transaction problems while maintaining open communication with the client… Having spent over 30 years engaging attorneys as transactional counsel, I have only met a few of this caliber.”
