Francisco Alvarez provides advice to clients across a full range of UK and international tax matters.
He has experience in complex cross-border transactions with international investors, including major infrastructure and construction projects, production sharing agreements, cross-border M&A and corporate restructurings.
Francisco is well versed in dealing with tax disputes for large multinationals with tax authorities all over the world. He is particularly skilled in dealing with disagreements arising under international and EU tax law, International Investment Treaties, Double Tax Treaties and long-term concession agreements.
Prior to joining McDermott, Francisco practised at a global law firm specialising in tax law and disputes.

- Acted for several UK and US-based MNEs in their applications to annul the European Commission’s decision of 2 April 2019 regarding UK state aid SA.44896*
- Advised a MNE on the possibility of initiating arbitration under Part VI of the Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty Related Measures to Prevent BEPS to resolve a multi-million transfer pricing dispute with an EU Member State*
- Advised a Danish MNE on multiple issues concerning the Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty Related Measures to Prevent BEPS and the UK-Denmark DTT*
- Represented several US and UK UCITS in litigation seeking the repayment of allegedly discriminatory withholding taxes on dividends under the applicable DTT*
- Acted for +17 well-known MNEs in substantial claims tried under group litigation orders for restitution of corporation tax levied in breach of EU law*
- Advised a UK-resident individual on the application of the Standard for the Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters and the UK-India DTT (and Protocol) in the context of a request by the Indian Tax authority for information concerning a UK bank account*
- Represented a Dutch-based company in First-Tier Tribunal proceedings concerning an exit tax charge arising from the transfer of the company’s place of effective management to the Netherlands*
- Represented an EU-based energy company bringing a state aid complaint against an EU member state concerning state aid granted through the imposition of different tax rates*
- Advised a UK-resident individual on income tax issues relating to a multi-million ICSID award*
