Overview
Joel R. Grosberg is co-head of McDermott’s Antitrust Mergers Focus Group and assists clients on civil and criminal antitrust matters, including obtaining merger clearances, counseling and litigation. He has represented clients in obtaining antitrust approvals in numerous challenging transactions, and in other government antitrust investigations before the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) and foreign competition authorities. Joel has significant experience in the high tech, chemical, health care and life sciences industries, including counseling on matters related to pricing and distribution practices and other competition-related issues.
Joel is consistently recognized in Chambers USA and was ranked as a leading antitrust lawyer in The Legal 500 United States and SuperLawyers. Chambers USA reports that Joel has “notable agency experience at the FTC,” and is “very knowledgeable…on merger related work.”
Earlier in his career, Joel was an attorney with the FTC’s Bureau of Competition (Mergers II), where he handled a full range of antitrust matters involving the chemical, computer hardware semiconductor, automotive parts, plastics, toy and paper industries.

- Obtained merger clearances for Motorola Solutions, Inc.’s acquisitions of Airbus’ DS Communications business, Kodiak, and other transactions
- Obtained merger clearances for DaVita’s acquisition of Renal Ventures Management, L.L.C., DSI Renal, Inc., and the acquisition of the US renal care business of Gambro Healthcare
- Successfully defended clients in FTC conduct investigations in the semiconductor and electronic health industry
- Obtained merger clearances for PerkinElmer’s acquisitions of Euroimmun and Packard Bioscience
- Obtained merger clearances for Evonik’s acquisition of Air Products’ specialty adhesives business
- Represented MedSolutions, Inc., in its sale to CareCore National, LLC, creating a leading specialty benefit management service provider
- Obtained merger clearance for Irving Oil Limited’s acquisition of ExxonMobil terminal/pipeline assets
- Obtained merger clearance for the merger of Blackboard, Inc., and WebCT, Inc.
- Obtained merger clearance for J-M Manufacturing Company, Inc.’s acquisition of PW Eagle, Inc.
- Obtained merger clearance for Enodis’ sale to Manitowoc
- Obtained merger clearance for a joint venture, creating the largest phosphorus chemicals producer manufacturer
- Advised Enodis plc in its sale to The Manitowoc Company, Inc., creating one of the largest global food service suppliers
- Advised in an acquisition, creating the largest US ammonium nitrate producer
- Advised in The Timken Company’s acquisition of Torrington Engineered Solutions Business from Ingersoll- Rand Company, creating the largest bearings producer in North America
- Advised in Computer Sciences Corp.’s acquisition of MYND corporation
